Heritage Chronicle — Memories of the World Heritage District

The GOODGODS Macau Heritage Chronicle is a cultural-tourism IP project themed on Macao’s World Heritage sites, pairing each with a lively GOODGODS character that depicts the history and legends behind the site, so everyone can rediscover Macao’s unique heritage.

Memories of the World Heritage District selects ten historic buildings of the Historic Centre of Macao, where East and West meet, together with the GOODGODS figures connected to them.

HeritageCarrying history forward

To preserve and to promote. The project keeps Macao’s history, culture and legends of the gods alive so this heritage is passed on and draws more people to notice and understand it.

ChronicleA local record of history

A gazetteer records a place’s history and culture; the project is an encyclopaedia of Macao’s heritage. It digs into local deities, history and World Heritage stories, presents them creatively, and promotes cultural education.

A city where East and West have mingled for more than 400 years. We reinterpret Macao’s legends, historical figures and heritage sites as original characters.

From the A-Ma Temple to the Guia Lighthouse, the ten GOODGODS line up along the Historic Centre; every back card is a heritage mark.

The draft puzzle is 3 × 4: numbering starts at No.01 bottom-right, runs leftwards, then row by row upwards to No.10, with the two top corners reserved for hidden characters. Turned over, each row mirrors as a real sheet would. All back cards are placeholders for now; the final back-side map is still to be designed.

Two corners are reserved for hidden characters, S01 Xian Xinghai and S02 Our Lady of China, both shown on draft layouts. The 3 × 4 puzzle holds the 10 main characters plus two hidden slots.

    In Macao I studied the Chinese language and Confucian learning,
    to bring Western astronomy, mathematics and geography into conversation with Chinese culture.
    My purpose is not only the Gospel, but the meeting of Eastern and Western learning in search of truth.

    I joined Chinese and Western learning and championed education and charity,
    vowing to enrich the nation through schooling and to seek a way to self-strengthening.

    Emperor after emperor honoured him until he was named the Martial Sage and received the incense of all.
    People trust his power to ward off evil and disaster, to bring fortune and protect every trade.

    I am Saint Lawrence, keeping watch on the slope above the church.
    The Portuguese once stood before me, watching the sea for the monsoon to bring the ships home.
    Pray with a true heart and I will steady the wind and bring the ships safely to shore, so families may gather again.

    I am Prince Na Tcha; I appeared as a child on Persimmon Hill and played with the children.
    Steep as the ground is, all are safe under my protection.

    By royal command I came from overseas, appointed governor with authority over the garrison.
    At once I built the fortress and set its defences,
    walls raised, cannon in place, guarding Macao and holding the enemy at bay.

03 — BEHIND THE GOODGOD

The incense of the A-Ma Temple came from the sea.

A-MA TEMPLE · BARRA SQUARE

A goddess of the sea who commands wind and wave.

Those caught in storms on night voyages came to safety when they followed her, so people built a temple in her honour and prayed for the peace of all. The A-Ma Temple, built in 1488, is where the Historic Centre of Macao begins.

    The A-Ma Temple is built

    On Barra Square, honouring A-Ma, goddess of the sea, protector of fishermen and sailors.

  2. 2005

    The Historic Centre of Macao is inscribed

    Its historic buildings and squares, the A-Ma Temple among them, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
